Ductless systems are designed to provide practical solutions for cooling and heating one or more zones. If you’re among the growing number of homeowners making the switch to ductless systems, you’ll get better performance from your unit if you operate it correctly and perform regular ductless maintenance.
Ductless Maintenance and Operation
Ductless mini splits use the same refrigeration principles for home cooling and heating as conventional central HVAC systems. A smaller evaporator coil is located in a wall-mounted air handler. The condenser and compressor are housed in a low-profile outside cabinet. The air handler and cabinet are linked with a thin conduit housing the electricity supply, condensate suction and refrigerant lines.
Routine maintenance is essential to maintain peak cooling and heating performance. Your maintenance schedule should include professional service in the spring and fall, and simple maintenance tips you can do through the year. Following are a few tasks your HVAC pro performs:
- The evaporator and drip pan are inspected for corrosion, debris and mold.
- Line sets are inspected for corrosion and damage.
- An electrical diagnostic is performed on temperature sensors, contactors and relays.
- Amperage is checked, and wiring and terminals are inspected for corrosion and wear.
- The evaporator and condenser are deep-cleaned to prevent formicary corrosion, which can cause tiny holes in copper.
Troubleshooting Tips
Ductless systems are extremely reliable. Like any machine, however, problems occur from time to time. If you’re experiencing cooling, heating or operational problems, try these troubleshooting tips:
- Free airflow is essential. Check the air filter often, and clean it if dirt is visible.
- Check the outdoor cabinet for airflow obstructions, such as weeds, leaves and debris.
- Wash the cabinet with a garden hose each month of use. Make sure the thermostat is “off” and the circuit breaker is flipped.
- For the best comfort and performance, set your favorite temperature, and place the fan in “auto” mode. The ductless system adjusts fan speeds automatically for optimal performance and temperature control.
