When your air conditioner goes on the blink, it’s a good idea to call in a professional to inspect your equipment and repair it. Now and then, though, a little DIY A/C troubleshooting will do the trick. Here are a few things to try in some of the most common situations.
A/C Isn’t Cooling
The reasons for inadequate cooling could be serious — or not. Before you call for help, look at the air filter. Is it dirty? Dirt buildup on the filter will block airflow and decrease the A/C’s ability to cool the home.
Check the indoor evaporator coils for ice buildup, which will impede cooling. If the coils are dirty, turn off the unit, let the ice defrost, and try cleaning them.
Otherwise, there may be something amiss with the air handler or even the compressor, and your A/C will need professional attention.
Inadequate Airflow
If the airflow from your A/C isn’t as strong as usual, make sure there is nothing obstructing air intake in front of the return vents. Check the air filter for cleanliness, and change it if need be. Also check the evaporator coils for dirt.
Other possible causes of inadequate airflow might be holes in the ductwork or disconnected segments. If your ductwork is accessible, you might repair holes and gaps with mastic and metal tape.
Other common reasons for poor airflow are:
- A malfunctioning blower motor
- Stuck ductwork damper
- Dirty blower wheel
Flooding or Excess Moisture
Again, check the air filter, making sure it’s properly installed and clean enough to allow air to pass through. Otherwise it can trap moisture, leading to excess condensation in the HVAC, icing of the evaporator coil, or the inability of the A/C to adequately dehumidify the home.
If you find water around the floor where the indoor section of the A/C is located, check the condensate drain for obstructions. You may need to call for help to clear it.
