With summer not far away, now’s a good time to consider an A/C replacement if your old unit is no longer operating effectively. While choosing an air conditioner with a high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is important, there are several other factors to take into account. They include:
1) A programmable digital thermostat is a helpful feature to have because you have better control over temperatures when you’re away from home or asleep. You can reduce your energy costs by setting a schedule that minimizes energy use when cooling (or heating) isn’t needed, or when setting it back won’t reduce home comfort. Along with this, emote control and communication between multiple thermostats add to convenience.
2) It’s crucial to choose an A/C replacement that is correctly sized. In order to maintain a comfortable temperature, it’s important that your new unit is big enough to cool the intended area. At the same time, an A/C that’s too big won’t cool or dehumidify your home efficiently. Make sure an HVAC professional does the sizing for you.
3) A thermal expansion valve is important because it controls the refrigeration cycle and will keep your indoor temperature regulated. This is will come in handy during the hottest days of summer and when there’s high humidity.
4) A filter check light will alert you when it’s time to check your HVAC filter. A clean filter will protect your A/C and furnace components, make sure you’re not wasting energy pumping air through a clogged filter, and ensure cleaner indoor air.
5) Finding an air conditioner that runs as quietly as possible is also advisable. While noisier units tend to be less expensive, you should know what noise level you’re comfortable with.
6) A fan-only option is a nice feature since it allows for air circulation even when you don’t need the A/C to be cooling your home, such as during cool spring and summer nights.
