If your water heater is reaching the end of its life, it may be time to consider a tankless water heater. How do you know if a tankless water heater is right for you? Here’s some basic information about the advantages of a tankless water heater versus a traditional storage-type model.
As the name implies, a tankless water heater has no tank to store large quantities of water. Tap water passes through the unit, where it’s heated immediately by a powerful heating element. This eliminates the standby energy loss of a standard water heater since the unit is not keeping 20 to 80 gallons of water heated constantly.
At the cash register, you will pay more for a tankless water heating than a storage type, partly because most homes need more than one to satisfy the same hot-water needs as one standard-sized storage water heater. While this may seem discouraging, remember that there’s no standby energy loss. Conventional units must maintain the temperature of large amounts of water. Approximately 25 percent of your energy bill goes to heating water with a storage-type water heater, and often that water will need to be reheated before it’s used. Most tankless models show significant long-term savings.
Conventional water heaters are notorious for running out of hot water. Most can’t keep up with the demand of multiple showers, and if the dishwasher is running at the same time, it’s almost guaranteed that somebody will have to take a cold shower. A properly sized tankless water heater system can produce non-stop hot water.
A standard tank-style water heater will usually last 10 years, at the most, while a tankless water heater will last up to 20 years. When a standard water heater fails, it’s not uncommon for the tank to rupture, spilling water.
