The advantages of a ductless mini split heat pump or air conditioner can’t be denied, as evidenced by their growing popularity across North America, but the installation of any HVAC solution is never the end of the story. If you want to keep your energy bills low, your home comfortable, and your system functioning years down the road, regular ductless mini split maintenance is necessary. However, it is important to understand your system and know what you can do and what you need a professional to do.
Checking and cleaning filter for the air handler (or handlers in a system with more than one) is the first, simplest step you can take. You should look up your model’s specifications online; some units need monthly cleaning, others can go a lot longer before needing to be cleaned (or changed, for systems that call for replacing a dirty filter). You should also be able to find manufacturer instructions on the best way to clean your filters. Typically, you can use a vacuum or some form of wet cleaning. Anyone can do this.
Your next step should be to remove and clean IAQ (indoor air quality) components. Again, you’ll want to check out the manufacturer’s instructions on where and how to do this. If you’re uncomfortable with maintenance like this, you’ll want to contact a professional.
Cleaning the evaporator coils comes third on your ductless mini split maintenance checklist. At this point things can go fairly wrong if you mess up. It’s not difficult, but it requires attention to detail and a basic understanding of what’s inside your system. If you do choose to do this yourself, you’ll want to purchase a cleaning kit meant for this purpose. Take care that the condensate line doesn’t get blocked or damaged during the cleaning and rinsing process.
