With cold weather arriving in Northeast Ohio, you may be wondering what you should do to protect your air conditioner condenser (the outside unit) from the elements. Many experts will tell you that it’s not necessary to do anything – leaving the outside unit alone is just fine. However, repairing an A/C can be costly, especially if the air conditioner condenser goes out.
So you might want to err on the side of caution when it comes to your outside A/C condensing unit.
If you are determined to protect your investment, its important to know what not to do. A major “no-no” when preparing your unit for colder months is covering the air conditioner condenser tightly. This traps moisture in the unit and will cause rusting.
To protect your A/C condensing unit during the winter, you can purchase a custom cover for the equipment that includes openings for ventilation and leaves a few inches open at the bottom. For the budget conscious, however, all that’s really necessary is laying a piece of plywood across the condensing unit with a few bricks to weigh it down.
