The life expectancy of a gas-fired furnace usually runs between 15 and 25 years. With proper preventive maintenance, some gas furnaces can last as long as 30 years but that’s exceptional. If your own furnace is older than 20 years, now is definitely the time to start shopping for a replacement. The cold, dark, middle of a freezing Northeast Ohio night is not the time to realize your heating system needs to be replaced. Planning ahead can save you money, too.
What You Can Expect
Replacing your gas furnace doesn’t have to be a bad experience. Sure, you will need to spend money, while devoting time to researching your options. On the other hand, you have an excellent opportunity to enjoy the benefits of owning a quieter and more energy-efficient heating system that will save you money on heating costs overall.
Another point to consider is getting your home audited by a qualified HVAC technician for problem areas. If your furnace is old, your ductwork probably is, too. Get a professional to perform an energy audit to identify places where your home is losing energy, so you can proceed to repair and seal those problem areas.
