Do you wake up every morning to ice-cold floors? Are the cold Northeast Ohio nights leaving you shivering? If your furnace does not seem to be doing the job you expect, it can be hard to relax and enjoy your home. Don’t become a slave to the weather; instead of waiting for summer to hurry up and rescue you, try the following troubleshooting tips to find out why your furnace isn’t delivering warm enough air:
- Is your thermostat working properly? Although it seems like a no-brainer, many people assume there’s a problem with their heating system without checking the thermostat settings first. Ensure that your thermostat is set on heat, at the right temperature and operating correctly.
- If your thermostat’s working properly, you may have a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker. If so, replace the fuse or reset the breaker and then start your heating system up again.
- If your furnace still isn’t producing warm air after you’ve replaced the fuse or reset the breaker, it’s time to go straight to the fuel source. Locate the natural gas or propane control valve and make sure that it’s turned on. It should be set parallel to the pipeline.
- If you have an older furnace without electronic ignition, check to see if the pilot light is out. It should be easily viewed when you open the access door on the furnace. If your pilot light is off and you are not sure how to light it yourself, contact a trained professional to light it for you. Many furnaces with pilot lights have instructions for lighting the system right near the access door.
- If you have a hot surface ignition or an electronic pilot light, you should refer to your owner’s manual for troubleshooting tips.
- Check to make sure the furnace air filter isn’t clogged, and change it if it looks dirty. Inspect registers to make sure they aren’t blocked by rugs, drapes or furniture.
If you’ve followed these steps and your furnace still isn’t blowing the hot air you need, it’s time to contact a professional.
