Programmable thermostats can help homeowners save money on energy bills, as well as help them to operate their HVAC system efficiently. When the programmable thermostat starts to malfunction, it can cause a number of headaches for the homeowner. Some thermostat problems are easy to fix while others will require replacing the device.
First check if your programmable thermostat is battery operated or wired into the HVAC system. For battery-operated thermostats, check that the batteries are still working. Replace batteries at least once every six months.
Possible Problem Areas and Solutions
- Incorrect installation – Do not install the thermostat on a wall that gets direct sunlight or has other temperature anomalies. The thermostat will inadvertently react to the temperature on the wall, resulting in incorrect readings. Try not to place the thermostat close to doors and windows or other drafty areas because this also will throw off the readings.
- Incorrect settings – Make sure that the time and temperature settings are correct.
- Check the power – The thermostat may have been switched off accidentally, or a circuit breaker may have tripped. Also check the fuse inside the thermostat and make sure it has not blown.
- Dirty thermostat – Is the inside of the thermostat clean? Dust and debris can cause malfunctions; you can clean the inside of the thermostat with a soft brush. Do not touch any of the components with your fingertips.
- Check that the thermostat is level – Some types of thermostats use a mercury switch, and the thermostat has to be level for it to work properly.
If you have tried all of the troubleshooting ideas and the thermostat still malfunctions, it may be time to replace it. Speak to your local HVAC professional for advice on programmable thermostats and the options that are available.
