When you have your home’s cooling or heating system installed, repaired or maintained, you may be offered a maintenance agreement or warranty. While a warranty may not be applicable on an older HVAC system, new system buyers are commonly offered both. However, choosing both options isn’t necessary, and knowing which one is right for you can be a challenge. In most cases, choosing the maintenance agreement is the right decision for a variety of reasons.
- Semi-annual checkups of your HVAC system come with a maintenance plan, and these can make sure you prevent problems before they arise, rather than fixing them as they occur, as would happen with a warranty. Typically, one maintenance check occurs before the cooling season and another before the heating season. Regular maintenance includes inspecting, cleaning, adjusting and tuning up your cooling or heating equipment, so it will run smoothly and efficiently.
- A maintenance agreement can help you lower your energy costs. That’s because a maintenance agreement will keep your HVAC system in top shape year-round so that it’s operating as efficiently as possible. This means more money in your pocket at the end of the month.
- Purchasing a maintenance agreement can help you save money on parts and repairs. While a maintenance plan can reduce these costs, repairs likely will be necessary eventually. With a maintenance agreement, you’ll pay less for repair time and parts needed to fix your HVAC system.
- Warranty providers often take several days or longer to make repairs. When your HVAC system isn’t working in the dead of winter or blazing hot middle of the summer, you want service right away, not just when a warranty provider finds the time. Maintenance agreements offer priority scheduling and often include same-day service.
