Boost the Performance of the Dehumidifier in Your Lorain Home

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: August 26, 2014

Boost the Performance of the Dehumidifier in Your Lorain HomeDuring the summer in Northeast Ohio, high levels of humidity can make an 80-degree day feel much hotter than it is. As a homeowner, you have the option to install a whole-house or portable dehumidifier to mitigate the effects of this heat and humidity. If you only have one room or a small area that has too much moisture, you’re best off with a portable unit. Otherwise, a whole-house system can improve the comfort level throughout your home.

While dehumidifiers are a great tool for keeping your home dry, they won’t work well if not used properly. We’ve listed a few ways you can boost the performance of your dehumidifier for maximum comfort:

  • Place your unit for maximum air flow. A portable system should be in a location where it’s clear of household objects so it can circulate as much air as possible.
  • Make sure the conditions are right. Your system will have instructions that list the specific temperatures in which your dehumidifier works the best. You unit will work in conjunction with your air conditioner.
  • Seal off the area. If hot and humid air is coming in from the outside of your home, your dehumidifier won’t work effectively, nor will your A/C. Your dehumidifier wasn’t designed to dry the air of the entire Cleveland area.
  • Ensure maximum air flow through your whole-house dehumidifier by having good ductwork.
  • Take additional measures to reduce sources of moisture in your home. Your dehumidifier can only do so much to dry the air. Everything from plumbing repairs to regular A/C maintenance to routinely changing air filters can have a positive impact on your home’s air quality and comfort.

By using these tips to remove excess moisture, you’ll be able to keep cool and prevent mold growth.
