Winter is just around the corner, and it’s time to make sure your hot water boiler is in good working order. You don’t want the cold, blustery season to arrive on Lake Erie and be unprepared to keep your family warm. If your home’s boiler was acting up last winter, it’s time to call a skilled professional to get it inspected and repaired. Even if you don’t suspect a problem, annual maintenance is always a good idea.
Six Common Problems Homeowners Face With Boilers:
- Noisy Pipes Loud pipes are often caused by a faulty circulator or water trapped in the return lines. Noisy pipes are more than just bothersome, they can cause serious damage if not professionally inspected and repaired.
- No heat If your boiler is producing no heat at all, the problem may be caused by low water levels, an ignition malfunction, or a faulty thermostat. Check each of these and then call a professional if you need further advice.
- Faulty radiators If you have a radiator in your home that won’t heat, you may be experiencing a faulty circulator or zone valve. If both of these are functioning properly, the problem may be caused by trapped air in the line or in the radiator.
- Problem with the expansion tank The expansion tank should be properly charged with air to keep the water in the system from boiling and subsequently exceeding the desired pressure. An issue with the expansion tank may be alleviated by draining and recharging.
- Poor heating If you’re experiencing a sudden change in the boiler’s heating capacity, the culprit may be an inadequate water level. A gradual change in heating ability over time is typically due to a build-up of mineral deposits in the heat exchanger.
- Water leakage The easiest cause of water leakage to repair is a leaking pipe connection. If the connection is secure, you may be experiencing a faulty circulator or pressure relief valve.
