Many indications that your HVAC system is approaching the end of its usable life are hard to spot, requiring a professional to make the diagnosis. However, others are more obvious, allowing you to make the diagnosis yourself.
It’s a good idea to replace your HVAC system before there’s a complete failure, even if such a replacement is not immediately necessary. Be on the lookout for the following signs that your system is on the brink of failure:
Advanced Age
If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Most heating and cooling systems are only meant to work until they’re about 20 years old. However, as they approach that time, you should expect higher operating costs. If your utility costs are steadily increasing, it may be because of your aging HVAC system.
Increased Noise
The fact that your HVAC system is loud is not always a sign that it’s about to fail. Aside from the fact that noise is sometimes a sign of a mechanical issue, older units will not run as quietly as newer models. Newer models are designed to be both quiet and efficient.
Dry, Dusty Air
An older furnace may make your air excessively dry, resulting in excessive dust. If you notice that members of your household have been suffering from allergies and dry skin more than usual, it may be because your HVAC system is old. You might also see other indications, such as an increase in static shocks and sick-looking plants.
