It’s rare for both HVAC components to fail at the same time—most often, either the indoor evaporator or the outdoor compressor quits and the other unit still operates. When this happens, you’ll have to choose between buying an HVAC system or replacing just the failed component. While the upfront cost is less if you buy a single unit, investing in a complete system is wiser for the following reasons.
Higher Energy Efficiency
New split systems are always given an efficiency rating based on matching components working in tandem. Your older components may run if you add a new, more efficient unit, but it can’t work at its maximum efficiency level.
Reliability and Longevity
Running an HVAC system made up of new and existing equipment means the older component is always working harder. This added strain makes it more prone to breakdowns or failures at the height of the season. If you want reliable, trouble-free operation for the next 10-15 years, it’s better to invest in an entirely new system.
Long Term Savings
Not only do you save energy with a new system, you’ll have fewer repairs and lower maintenance costs over a long service life. If you only update half the system you’ll lose out on those potential savings, and you’ll still have the expense of replacing the older unit when it fails.
Advanced Technology and Features
Not only are today’s HVAC systems more efficient, they offer newer technology and features that you can’t benefit from if you buy just a single unit. With a new system, you can choose advanced features like scroll compressors, improved coil designs, variable-speed fans and thermal expansion valves that boost energy efficiency, humidity control and comfort.
Intact Manufacturer’s Warranty
Manufacturers’ warranties only apply if a split system is installed per their specifications. If you decide to install just one component, it can’t meet those specs, so you won’t have warranty coverage against manufacturers’ defects.
