With cooler weather on the way, it’s time to make sure that your heat pump is ready for fall and winter. When you put off heat pump maintenance, you run the risk of having your system break down on you when you need it the most. Routine maintenance also reduces the amount of energy your heat pump uses, which saves you money.
Use these tips to make sure your home will be heated throughout the colder months.
Put in a New Filter
A brand new air filter will help your heat pump run efficiently. When the air filter becomes clogged with dirt, it forces your system to run harder in order to heat your home. Remember to check and replace your air filter every one to three months depending on how often you have to heat your home.
Clean the Fan and Outdoor Coils
The fan and outdoor coils on your heat pump aren’t able to work as efficiently when they’re covered with dirt, which can cause wear and tear on the compressor. If the compressor becomes damaged, you might end up having to replace your heat pump. Turn off power to the system before cleaning off the fan and outdoor coils.
Remove Weeds and Other Vegetation
Weeds, branches, leaves and other kinds of vegetation can build up around your outside unit, which can obstruct airflow. Clear away any vegetation from around it, and trim back bushes, so they’re not blocking airflow as well.
Schedule Professional Maintenance
A technician can perform heat pump maintenance that includes tasks you might not be comfortable about doing on your own. This includes checking all parts of your system for potential problems, looking for any obstructions that could interfere with airflow, checking for signs of refrigerant leaks and tightening electric terminal connections. Having a technician handle all of these tasks helps ensure that your heat pump is in good condition for the season.
