When you’re in the middle of the heating season, there are tons of things you need to think about as a homeowner. The best way to do an effective job in keeping your home running smoothly during these months is to know what you’re talking about. You can start by learning these common terms:
AFUE
This term, which stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, is a measurement of the seasonal energy efficiency of your home’s gas heating systems. This measurement is often a determining factor when a homeowner is in the market for a new unit.
BTU
The British Thermal Unit refers to the consumption or transfer of energy, and is typically used as a representation of the power of a given system. Obviously, the higher the number, the more powerful the unit, and that can be a real selling point.
Ductwork
This is the transport system that carries air throughout your home. They vary in terms of shape (round and rectangular) and design (sheet metal, fiberglass, and vinyl).
Furnace
Here’s an easy one. A furnace is the equipment that handles the heating of your home via the delivery of heated air through its ductwork setup.
HVAC
Here’s an important term that we use all the time. HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, but typically encapsulates anything related to those topics and several others.
Thermostat
Your home’s thermostat controls the heating and cooling. Thermostats come in a wide variety of designs, with plenty of options to help lower energy usage and cost.
Zoned System
Many homeowners are still unaware that zoned systems are even a thing. In a typical heating and cooling system, you’re forced to condition your entire home at once. With a zoned system, you can heat or cool a smaller, designated area.
