Winter will be here before you know it, so this is a perfect time to think about winterizing your HVAC system. This helps ensure that your system is prepared for colder temperatures and winter storms. The following steps can help you get your HVAC equipment ready for the upcoming season.
Shut Off the Power Supply
Before you do anything, make sure that you turn your HVAC power supply off to reduce the risk of damaging your system. After you’ve turned the switch off, you can start working on winterizing your HVAC system.
Do a Thorough Cleaning
Summer storms and fall leaves can leave a mess in and around your HVAC unit. Get rid of any weeds and other debris that’s around the outside of your system. While you’re at it, trim bushes that are growing too close to it is well. This helps prevent debris from building up in and around your system again. Clean the inside of your unit carefully, which includes wiping off the fins and checking for any that are bent.
Cover Your HVAC System
Keeping your outdoor HVAC unit covered helps protect it from damage from hail and other winter storms. Find a waterproof covering to put over your HVAC unit, and make sure that it fits securely so it won’t blow off. If the inside of your unit is still damp from cleaning, let it dry before you put the cover on. This helps prevent mold and mildew from growing.
Replace Your Air Filter
Although you won’t be using your air conditioning in winter, it’s still a good idea to put a new air filter in before the season starts. This helps ensure that dust and debris won’t be drifting around your home through your vents when the heat’s on. It also ensures that your HVAC system will be able to work as efficiently as possible when you use it. A dirty air filter causes the system to work harder.
