Every winter, millions of households try their best to stay warm. What it typically comes down to is know-how and diligence. While we can’t really help on the diligence side of things, we’ve outlined a few seasonal HVAC tips that will assist you with the know-how.
Schedule Preventative Maintenance
The best way to ensure that your heating system doesn’t run into any problems is to schedule a preventative maintenance check conducted by a qualified technician. Ideally, this should be done twice a year, but an annual inspection will do the trick until your equipment has aged several years.
Check and Replace Your Air Filter
Checking your system’s air filter once per month and then either changing it or replacing it as needed will keep your equipment running smoothly. Plus, you obviously get the benefit of improved indoor air quality throughout your house.
Seal Air Leaks Around the Home
It’s impossible to get rid of every single air leak, but if you have too many, the heat loss will prevent your home from staying warm. The biggest culprits are around the edges of your doors and windows, so seal any leaks that you find with weatherstripping or caulking, depending on its size.
Set Your Programmable Thermostat
The temperature at which you set your programmable thermostat will depend on your personal preference, but you should try to keep it between 69 and 72 degrees. And if you want even better control, then you should definitely consider upgrading to a Wi-Fi model if your current thermostat doesn’t have that capability.
Upgrade to a Zoned System
It can sometimes be difficult to evenly heat your home with a traditional HVAC system. One way to solve this problem is with the installation of a zoned system, which works by separating your home into a series of zones and heating up only the areas that need it with the use of multiple thermostats.
