Your HVAC system has served you well for a long time. It still runs fine, but it uses too much energy, and your house isn’t as comfortable as it could be. You don’t necessarily need a whole new system. Just a few simple upgrades could make a world of difference. Here’s a brief guide to upgrading your HVAC system.
Learning Thermostat
A smart thermostat can be adjusted from anywhere through an app on your smartphone. A learning thermostat takes things a step further: It tracks your heating and cooling preferences over time in order to adjust automatically. If you like things a little cooler at night, then after a few days, it can bring the temperature down a few degrees as you go to bed — and then back up in the morning — without your having to tell it to.
There are also thermostats that scan to see whether or not you’re in the house and switch automatically to energy-saving mode when you leave.
Humidity Control
If the humidity in your home is too high, it can foster mold and bacteria. If it’s too low, flu viruses will thrive. Whole-home humidity control allows you to set your ideal humidity level and keep it in the Goldilocks zone. Not only will this lead to cleaner air, it can save you energy. By turning your humidity up a few degrees, you can turn your furnace down a bit while still feeling just as warm. That way, you save energy without sacrificing comfort.
Air Purifier
If you have allergy sufferers or those with asthma in your home, then upgrading your HVAC system needs to include an air purifier. With a high-efficiency filter, your air purifier can remove 99.97% of contaminants, down to 0.3 microns. That includes cigarette smoke, insecticide particles, and even viruses and bacteria. These high-efficiency filters are too thick to go into your HVAC system, so an air purifier is necessary to keep your home’s air clean and breathable.
