Our area is known for its long, chilly winters, but in recent years, we’ve been seeing more warm weather than usual, and along with it, extended use of the air conditioner. That’s just one reason why spring HVAC maintenance is crucial. And even though it’s February, we don’t think it’s too early to start planning.
Scheduling your maintenance ahead of the rush is always wise; that way, you’re sure to not have to wait for a tech visit so that anything that’s wrong can be addressed quickly, with parts located and repairs made. There’s no need to suffer through warm spells without the A/C when, with good planning, you can be certain of staying comfortable.
Here’s a little checklist to help you when you discuss spring maintenance with your HVAC tech.
Spring Maintenance To-Do List
Before your service tech arrives for your spring maintenance, you can do a few things yourself. Start by cleaning up around the outdoor condenser, removing weeds and leaves and hosing down the unit. Indoors, change the air filter. Then, vacuum the grilles on the vents. Check for obstructions (drapes, furniture, magazine holders) blocking air on the returns.
When your tech arrives, discuss the tasks you would like performed, including:
- Check and calibrate the thermostat.
- Measure amperage and voltage of blower motor.
- Inspect bearings, lubricating if needed.
- Inspect and clean evaporator coil.
- Flush condensate drain.
- Inspect and clean condenser coil.
- Inspect compressor, measuring amperage and voltage, and wiring connections. Check compressor fan and motor.
- Check wiring for fraying or disconnects.
- Inspect/test capacitors.
- Inspect fan blade.
- Measure temperature differential of supply and return air.
- Inspect ductwork.
Ask what else the service tech recommends for spring maintenance. This might be a good time for a few upgrades, perhaps to a programmable or Wi-Fi thermostat. You might also look into a better-quality air filter to improve your indoor air quality.
