What Are the First HVAC Parts to Need Replacement?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: September 15, 2020

Considering the number of components in an HVAC system, what are the first replacement parts that will likely be needed? A new central air conditioner today can be expected to last about 15 years, while a gas furnace may last 20 years or more. Annual preventative maintenance by a qualified HVAC service contractor helps ensure the maximum life span of these units. However, like any mechanical device that incurs wear and tear due to usage, individual parts may fail along the way. Here are the typical first-replacement parts in cooling and heating systems.

Air Filter.

This one’s a no-brainer. The air filter in a central HVAC system continuously accumulates dust and dirt and must be replaced regularly to ensure system performance and efficiency. In general, the air filter should be replaced every month during the summer cooling season when the AC’s running and every other month during the heating season.

Air Conditioner Contactors and Capacitors.

To switch the powerful air-conditioner compressor installed in the outdoor unit on and off, a high-powered capacitor and contactors are utilized. These electrical components are exposed to wear and heat and are often the first replacement parts required in a central AC. A qualified professional service tech can handle the job quickly.

System Blower Fan.

Because this unit, located in the indoor air handler, circulates air during both air-conditioner and furnace operation, it typically receives more annual hours of wear and tear than other parts. Therefore, a blower fan may be among the first replacement parts in a system that runs in both seasons.

AC Coils.

The indoor air-conditioner evaporator coil and the outdoor condenser coil circulate refrigerant to absorb and dissipate heat. Coil leaks that cause refrigerant loss may develop over time due to an accumulation of dust and dirt on coil surfaces, corrosive substances in the air, and vibration from AC system components.
