Your HVAC system needs to be cleaned so that it functions smoothly and lasts longer. Without HVAC training, you can’t clean the entire system yourself. Fortunately, you can clean some accessible parts like the registers and part of the ducts without much difficulty. Here’s an HVAC cleaning procedure you can follow:
- Cover your supply registers by lifting them, wrapping a paper towel over them, and then replacing them. Covering them prevents dislodged dust from blowing into your rooms as you clean.
- Set your thermostat to “fan on” and turn the “heat/cool” mode off. Leaving the fan running will help move the dust you’ll loosen with your brushing and banging.
- Check that your current furnace filter is correctly in place.
- Knock loose any dust buildup in your ductwork. Use a brush that resembles a toilet brush or stiff-bristle paintbrush to tap on the accessible ductwork in your basement. That will help in breaking down the dust deposits that may be sticking to the duct’s insides.
- Sweep out the dirt and dust in the supply registers. Position a running vacuum with the end of the hose close to the register. Lift the register and catch any dust that the fan may push out using the hose. Sweep into the register’s piping as far as you can reach with the hose. If there’s a buildup of dust in the register, scuff it loose with your brush.
- As you sweep out the registers, remember to remove and get rid of the paper towels you put in place before.
- Unscrew your return air registers and sweep them out as well.
- Shut off the fan at the thermostat. Turn off the power to your furnace.
- Remove the furnace’s front panels and use a vacuum to sweep up the dust buildup in the return air boot and blower compartment.
- Replace your old filter, which by now will have captured the dirt and dust you stirred up during the HVAC cleaning. Put the panels back on the furnace and turn your system back on.
Cleaning your air ducts once or twice a year will be quite beneficial to your HVAC system and air quality. Incorrect HVAC cleaning could end up making things worse for you, so don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance in case you’re unsure of anything.
