How Can an AC Vent Booster Help Your Home’s HVAC Unit?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: August 26, 2021

Many homeowners in recent years have added an AC vent booster to their home’s ductwork to help them out during the summer months. Let’s take a look at how this device works and the potential benefits of having one.

How an AC Vent Booster Works

The intent of a home’s HVAC system is to keep a household’s temperature at a comfortable level, but there are times when, no matter how long you run the equipment, it’s just not enough. A vent booster, which is a type of ductwork booster fan, pulls air from the ductwork and into a room. They’re used more as a supplement solution and can reduce issues until you’re able to take more effective measures such as upgrading your HVAC equipment and/or duct system.

Inline Fans vs. AC Vent Boosters

These two types of ductwork booster fans have the same basic functionality, but they are quite different. First off, inline fans are installed directly into the ductwork, while vent boosters are installed in each room and plug directly into the wall. Second, inline fans are designed to assist larger homes where the ductwork has multiple bends and divisions. Here’s a quick look at the benefits of a vent booster (also known as a register fan):

  • Less expensive. Standard vent boosters have a much lower price range than inline fans. Vent boosters top out at around $60, while inline fans can cost as much as $200.
  • Cheaper installation. With a vent booster, you don’t need to hire an HVAC technician to infiltrate your ductwork for the installation. Since the installation is done outside the ductwork, it won’t cost you nearly as much.
  • Additional options. You have the choice of higher-price vent boosters that feature multiple speeds, remote access, and a digital thermostat. These options give the units additional functionality and make them more effective.

Adding an AC vent booster to your ductwork may provide you with more comfort for the summer.
