Ceiling fans get a lot of use during Ohio’s hot, muggy summers, but finding an energy-efficient model can help you stay cool without raising your bills.
Ceiling-fan efficiency is indicated by the ratio of air moved per watt of energy used, expressed as cubic feet per minute (CFM)/watt. A higher number means greater efficiency. Efficient fans achieve a rating of at least 75.
Aeratron Ceiling Fans
By basing their designs on nature and aeronautics, Aeratron has created fans with efficiency ratings far above the average, reaching as high as 483 CFM/watt. Several models have earned the Energy Star — Most Efficient rating, and the brand claims their AE2+ Series is the most efficient small fan on the market. The blades in this series are equipped with winglets at the ends (like those found on airplane wings) which reduce drag and increase efficiency. Operating at noise levels as low as 4dB, these fans are also among the quietest available. The brand focuses on performance, so design options are limited to a few ultra-modern styles with a choice of metallic and wood finishes.
Fanimation Ceiling Fans
Fanimation’s fans are on the high end pricewise, but they offer an uncommon combination of energy efficiency and a good selection of traditional, modern, and transitional styles. Their most efficient model, the MAD8531, carries an Energy Star — Most Efficient rating and offers a 420 CFM/watt rating. The FPD8159 is close behind with a 399 CFM/watt rating. Less-pricey models are available in larger sizes, but most are also less efficient, so choose carefully.
Westinghouse Ceiling Fans
If you’re looking for a more widely available brand, Westinghouse is a good choice. Although most models reach CFM/watt ratings in the 70s or 80s, this brand’s fans are still among the more efficient of those you’ll find at large appliance stores. They also offer less-common styles, such as their rainbow fan for kids and vintage designs well suited to period style or farmhouse decor.
