Finding the optimum thermostat placement can be challenging. Locating the thermostat in the wrong place may cause it to turn on the HVAC system so that it runs when you don’t want it to. Consider all the sources of heat and cold air that may impact the thermostat before you install it.
Where Thermostat Placement Shouldn’t Be — and Why
Here are some of the locations for thermostat placement to avoid when locating your thermostat.
- Exterior walls. Exterior walls may be heated or cooled off so that they impact the thermostat. Locate the thermostat on an interior wall so that outside temperatures don’t affect it.
- Drafty places. Locating a thermostat near or across from windows and doors can allow it to be impacted by drafts so that the HVAC runs too much.
- Hallways. Although thermostats are commonly located in hallways, the hall is not the best location for them. Being long and narrow, hallways have less airflow and circulation, so the temperature isn’t the average of the house temperature. That means you could get a comfortable hallway, but not so much for the rest of the house.
- Supply vents. A thermostat situated above or below a supply vent will be a confused thermostat. As air blows out of the vent that is warmer or cooler than the overall temperature, the HVAC will turn on and off frequently and your home won’t be comfortable.
- Near lamps and TV sets. These electronic devices will heat up the thermostat so that it will think the air in the home is a lot warmer than it is.
- Bathrooms and kitchens. These locations tend to be warm and humid; your AC may run continuously as the thermostat tells it it’s way too hot in the bathroom or kitchen.
The ideal location for a thermostat is a room where people gather, such as a living room or family room. These are generally located in the “center” of the home. Placing the thermostat where everyone gathers will mean it’s easily accessed by most of the home’s occupants.
