As temperatures get warmer and warmer during the summer, Lorain homeowners rely on their air conditioning to keep their home cool. How can you avoid too much AC strain this summer while making sure your home still feels comfortable, even on the hottest days? Keep the following AC tips in mind.
Use Ceiling Fans
If you have ceiling fans in your home, put them to use on hot days instead of depending solely on your AC. Running ceiling fans can help living rooms, bedrooms, and other parts of your home feel cooler without you having to turn down your thermostat more and run your AC frequently. Make sure your ceiling fans are running in a counterclockwise direction to push air down rather than up.
Adjust Your Thermostat
You don’t need to have your thermostat set at the same temperature all the time. In fact, turning it up at times can help you save money on your energy bills while also reducing AC strain. Turn your thermostat up by 8 to 10 degrees when you won’t be home. You can turn it down again once you’re home. Having a programmable or smart thermostat makes this easier to do.
Change HVAC Filters
HVAC filters are responsible for filtering pet dander, dust, and other allergens and pollutants from your home. You’ll need to replace your HVAC filters on a regular basis since they become covered in debris over time. Dirty HVAC filters make your AC work harder, which can result in excess wear and tear. You should replace these filters every few months — or more often as needed.
Observe the 20-Degree AC Rule
Avoid turning your thermostat more than 20 degrees lower than the outdoor temperature. Doing this can cause your AC to run more often, creating AC strain all summer long.
