When your HVAC system breaks down, it needs to be replaced as quickly as possible, especially in the midst of chilly Ohio weather. However, between purchase and installation, it can be a serious blow for your wallet. How do you find a cost-effective HVAC system that will still provide your home with the comfort it needs? Here are a few options.
- Heat pump. Gas-furnace installation costs an average of $4,500. High-efficiency models run up to $10,000. Heat-pump installation is around $3,500. Plus, with a heat pump, you essentially get two for one from the same unit: heating in winter and cooling in summer. Factor in the significant energy savings they bring and it’s a great investment, especially if you’re on a budget.
- Ductless mini-split. Good for smaller houses or for heating and cooling a specific area of your home, ductless mini-splits are cheaper than central systems but cost more to install. The overall price is still lower, though, for a smaller area. Mini-splits are heat pumps, so they have the added benefits of better energy efficiency and dual heating and cooling in a single unit. Plus, they eliminate the energy losses associated with ductwork, and the same system can be zoned for multiple rooms.
- Window unit. A window unit only heats or cools a single room, but even two or three units are still cheaper to purchase and install than a central HVAC system. However, the main problem is that they aren’t as efficient. You may save on upfront costs, but over time, you’ll pay a lot more in energy bills.
- Geothermal heat pump. If you can afford a higher upfront cost but want a cost-effective HVAC system in the long run, consider a geothermal heat pump. Installation costs average $25,000, though some can be recovered through tax credits. However, they can lower your cooling bills up to 50% and your heating bills up to 70%, saving you thousands of dollars per year.
