Repairs to crucial equipment such as your HVAC system are something we’d rather not think about until the problem is staring us in the face. But maybe you should think about common HVAC repairs. It’s a fact that preventative maintenance in spring and fall can find failing parts so that they can be repaired or changed before they lead to a more expensive breakdown. That’s why it’s good to have some familiarity with your equipment and to be on top of issues before they lead to major repairs.
Below is a short list of common HVAC repairs you might have to deal with.
- Air filter. It may seem simplistic to mention the air filter, but it is an important part of the overall functioning of your HVAC. When it’s left unchanged, it collects a layer of dirt that slows down airflow. Parts heat up as friction occurs from slow airflow. Over time, this leads to more costly operation of the unit, and eventually, to breakdowns. Change the filter regularly, as needed, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Thermostat. A malfunctioning thermostat is a frequent cause of the HVAC not operating properly. It may be an issue as simple as a disconnected wire, or perhaps batteries need changing. Or, the thermostat may need recalibration, which is an easy task for an HVAC tech. If the thermostat is old, it may be time to get a replacement. Whenever possible, upgrade to a programmable or smart model.
- Dirty coils. The outdoor condenser and indoor evaporative system each have coils that contribute to the air conditioning process. When they get dirty, the cooling process may be impeded. Have your HVAC tech clean the coils during service this spring. A sign the coils are dirty can be that air from the vents is not cool or that the AC doesn’t shut off.
- Blower motor. When the blower motor is failing, you may hear noises coming from vents or experience weak airflow, overheating, or high energy bills. Call your HVAC tech to address this, which is one of the more common HVAC repairs.
