Your HVAC system has served you well for years, but it’s not performing like it used to. Is it worthwhile to keep up with maintenance and repairs, or should you invest in a new unit? Here are a few signs that it’s time for an HVAC upgrade.
- Age. If your AC is more than 10 years old or your furnace is more than 12 years old, consider an HVAC upgrade. The unit may still be working fine, but it’s better to make the upgrade now, on your terms, and take the time to consider all your options, rather than wait until the system goes out and you’re forced into a snap decision while you’re left without air.
- High energy bills. Even with proper maintenance, HVAC systems gradually lose efficiency as they get older. Meanwhile, new HVAC equipment is constantly evolving to be more efficient than ever. If your energy bills are rising, upgrading to a new system with a higher SEER or AFUE rating could save you a bundle.
- Frequent or expensive repairs. If your system breaks down and requires service more than once or twice a year, it’s not worth continuing to pour money into the unit. Likewise, if the cost of repairs is more than half of what it would cost to buy a new unit, an HVAC upgrade would be a good investment that will save you money and frustration in the long run.
- Short cycling. Does your system turn on and off quickly, and does it do this over and over again? It could be a simple fix, but it may also mean your system is too big for your home. If it goes on too long, short cycling will wear out your system prematurely, necessitating a new unit anyway and driving up your energy bills in the process. Especially if you’re also experiencing high humidity and disparate temperatures throughout your home, call your HVAC contractor to see if you need to upgrade to a properly sized system.
