Tankless heaters can be a great addition to a home, but in many cases storage tank water heaters are still the best option. There are benefits and drawbacks to both types of water heaters, but consider the following advantages of storage tank water heaters when it comes time for a replacement.
Substantial hot water capacity. As long as you initially size your storage tank water heater correctly, you will rarely run into a situation where you don’t have enough hot water. Models range from 20 to 120 gallons for homes.
Less expensive upfront. When it comes to budgeting unexpected replacements, a lower installation cost can be very important. On top of the unit itself, remember that it will be easier and cheaper to replace an existing tank water heater with another one. A tankless water heater may require some expensive work to be done beforehand, especially if it’s a gas model.
Can serve multiple outlets. One of the limitations of tankless heaters is that they need to be located close to the faucets that they will supply water to. A storage tank water heater can sit in your basement and provide hot water to essentially as many water outlets as you want.
Better flow rate. One of the most common complaints with tankless water heaters is that problems can arise when you need hot water at more than two taps at once. In most situations, a storage tank heater can provide a steady stream of hot water wherever you need it. You can still get plenty of hot water with a tankless system; it just may need one or more supplemental point-of-use tankless units.
Maintenance is simple. Storage tank heaters are relatively simple and easy to access. This gives them the advantage of being easy to maintain and fix if needed, compared to a tankless water heater that can be hidden away and hard to access.
