It’s that time of year again: time for a furnace inspection. Is regular HVAC maintenance really that important? When should you do it, and what are the benefits? Here, we’ll discuss what you need to know.
When to Do HVAC Maintenance
Your furnace should be inspected every year — ideally in the fall right before temperatures drop — to ensure your furnace is in prime shape for the coming heating season. This is separate from your annual AC inspection, which should be done around April, before the start of cooling season.
What if you forget, though, and halfway through December you still haven’t had your inspection? Schedule it anyway. Fall is the ideal time, but it’s better to do it late in the season than not at all. It’s estimated that up to 75% of HVAC problems could be prevented with annual maintenance. Keeping your system in shape allows it to run more efficiently, reducing repairs and extending the unit’s life.
What to Expect from Your Furnace Inspection
During your furnace inspection, your HVAC technician will look at the unit’s inner workings, including the blower motor, wiring, belts, flame sensor, and other components, to ensure everything is working properly. If a part is aging, damaged, corroded, or about to fail, it can be replaced before it causes bigger problems. They’ll clean the blower as well, removing dirt and debris and lubricating all moving parts.
The technician will also look at your thermostat, checking the batteries and settings and ensuring that the temperature readings are correct and that it’s set to provide the ideal balance between comfort and efficiency.
Your vents and ductwork will also be inspected. How is your airflow? Does your filter need replacing? Are there ductwork leaks? The technician may even recommend a home-energy audit to test for air leaks throughout your house — though that’s a separate appointment. Whatever your home needs for your furnace to operate at maximum efficiency, your annual maintenance visit is the way to make sure you get it.
