For heating and cooling remodels, room additions and practically any space in your home, the efficient and versatile ductless mini split is tough to beat.
A ductless mini split is a heat pump with three main components. As with central A/Cs and conventional air-source heat pumps, the outdoor unit houses the compressor/condenser. One or more indoor air handlers include the evaporator, filter and blower. The outdoor unit connects with up to four indoor air handlers via a thin conduit. The conduit houses the refrigerant tubing, power supply, condensate drain and suction tubing.
Versatile installation
To run the conduit from the outdoor unit to the indoor air handlers, you only need a small hole, about 3 inches in diameter, in the outer wall of your home. This space-saving feature makes ductless mini splits an attractive option when extending ductwork isn’t possible or cost effective. The main energy savings derive from the absence of ductwork; with no ducts, there’s no problem with air leaks. Also, there are no security issues common with window air conditioners.
The conduit may extend 50 feet for more installation options, depending on your needs. The indoor air handlers are usually mounted high on walls or hung from the ceiling. The outdoor unit should be at least one foot away from the house and any other obstacles to allow free airflow.
Energy efficiency
Ductless mini splits manufactured today are more energy efficient than ever, competing with high-efficiency air conditioners, and easily beating furnaces and baseboard heating for efficiency. In addition, each air handler has independent temperature control for a zoned system. This allows you to heat or cool only the areas you want, rather than the entire house.
Simple maintenance
Maintenance involves changing or cleaning the filter regularly and keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris (leaves, weeds, and ice and snow). Those who are mechanically inclined can vacuum the indoor evaporator with a soft bristle extension in between professional maintenance service visits. (Ductless mini splits are redesigned split-system heat pumps, and do require professional preventive maintenance at least once per year.)
