It’s wonderful when your heat pump runs smoothly, providing comfortable cooling or heating in your home. We’d like to depend on a heat pump to always function to our satisfaction, and usually it does, but occasionally problems may arise. Before calling for repairs, see if you can resolve the issue by troubleshooting at home instead.
Here are some common problems and their potential solutions.
Heat pump doesn’t come on?
- First, see if it’s getting power by checking your circuit breaker for a blown fuse. If the circuits that supply the pump have tripped, reset by turning the circuit switch off and then on. If it continues to trip, there’s probably an electrical system short. If so, call a technician to correct the problem.
- If your thermostat has recently been replaced, check that it’s the correct model for your pump.
Heat pump’s cooling and heating is inefficient
- Raise the thermostat five degrees and wait a few minutes.
- Make sure the room heating registers are open.
- If the heat pump filter is dirty, replace it.
- If your pump is supplied with auxiliary heating elements, check that they’re working (if the problem is inadequate heating).
- Check the outside condensing unit, as it may need its coils cleaned.
If none of these steps corrects the problem, call your repair technician to examine the system.
Heat pump trips circuit breaker or freezes
- Check the condenser unit. If it’s frozen, turn it off.
- Check airflow to the unit such as the return-air registers. See if there’s a clogged air filter.
- If no problem is found with the airflow, call a technician.
Pump frequently switches on and off
- When this occurs, it’s usually due to a clogged filter or blower that causes the unit to overheat. The filter may need to be cleaned or replaced.
- The thermostat may be calibrated improperly. It may also not sense the room temperature due to being improperly located.
