A whole-house air purification system handles the air pollutants you can see as well as those you can’t. Dust and other large, inorganic airborne particles have always been an issue in homes. Most of it originates inside the house and in bright light can be observed floating in the air. But other components of indoor air pollution can’t be seen with the naked eye — microorganisms such as mold spores, bacteria and pollen.
These substances, sources of allergies and other physical symptoms, infiltrate from outside and may reach concentrations up to 100 times the outdoor level. In addition, chemical vapors that cause odors and irritation also accumulate. Simple filtration with standard air filters helps control some dust. However, only a whole-house air purification system addresses the issues of microscopic pathogens as well as inorganic dust particles in your air. Here’s how a typical system works:
Mounted inside your heating/cooling ducts, a whole-house system treats all the air in your home as it circulates through the ductwork. In a typical day, the entire quantity of household air passes through the ducts many times, ensuring repeated treatment by the filter.
As the air flow passes through the whole-house air purifier, a high-efficiency pleated fabric filter rated MERV 16 removes inorganic dust and more than 90 percent of airborne micro-organisms down to a size of .3 microns. This includes mold spores, pollen and bacteria.
Because filtration captures but may not kill some micro-organisms, a whole-house filter unit also incorporates medical-grade ultraviolet (UV) lamps to disinfect the air path. UV light has proven germicidal effects and destroys micro-organisms by disrupting their DNA.
As the air path is exposed to UV light, it passes through a grid coated with a titanium-dioxide catalyst. The ultraviolet light energy activates the catalyst to break down odors and chemical vapors in the air, converting them to carbon dioxide and water.
