As more homeowners expect and strive for more comfortable and efficient homes, home energy upgrades, such as air sealing and insulation, are on the rise. Another home comfort upgrade that’s gaining attention for maximizing comfort and driving energy savings is the zoned heating system. If total comfort control and lower energy bills appeal to you, keep reading to see if a zoned heating system is right for your Lorain home.
Zoned Heating Systems
A zoned heating system can heating each zone of your home to the thermostat setting in a respective area (i.e. one thermostat per zone). Heated airflow is restricted or permitted to each zone by a network of motorized ductwork doors. The motorized duct doors automatically open and close based on the signals from their zone’s thermostat. To make zoned systems user-friendly, all zones can be programmed from a central programming thermostat.
Greater Comfort and Home Efficiency
Settling on a comfortable temperature, or at least an agreeable temperature can be difficult when occupants have different temperature preferences. Moreover, most homes have temperature swings from one room or area to another due to different heat gain/loss factors, such as sun orientation and drafts, as well as the chimney effect — warmer air always rises.
Zoned heating systems mitigate unwanted temperature variances in the home, allowing for personalized temperature settings in each zone. For example, a zoned temperature setting in a retrofitted attic bedroom may be quite different from the heat setting on the ground floor.
Zoned heating systems offer many more benefits:
- Lower energy bills: Non-zoned homes are controlled by one thermostat, and the furnace works to heat the entire home. With a zoned heating system, you can save energy by heating only occupied zones.
- Reduced heating load: By reducing the square footage that requires heating, you effectively lessen the heating load for your HVAC system. This means less wear and tear, potentially fewer repairs and an extended HVAC lifespan.
