The Lorain and Oberlin area’s continental climate means we depend on effective heating and cooling to stay comfortable for much of the year. Professional air balancing helps your system do its job correctly so you’ll feel comfortable all year in every room of your home.
How Air Balancing Benefits You
Have you noticed a certain part of your house is hard to heat or cool? No matter where you set the thermostat, that room is never the right temperature. Maybe it also feels too humid or dry. If so, air balancing can help.
Correcting airflow problems also improves your system’s energy efficiency, lowering your heating and cooling bills. Because airflow efficiency influences the size of the heating or cooling equipment your home needs, this assessment process should be done before you buy a new A/C or furnace.
What’s Involved in the Process
Simply put, the process involves testing and fine-tuning your heating and cooling system’s air output so you receive the right amount of conditioned air in every room.
Your technician will start by measuring the airflow from your air registers. This may be done in part simply by feeling how much air is coming out, but for more accurate measurements, an air balancing hood will be attached to each register and grill. The technician will also use a variety of instruments including a manometer to measure system pressures, an anemometer to measure airspeed, and a hygrometer and thermometer to measure the temperatures and humidity levels in your system.
All this helps the technician pinpoint the cause of any problems in your system so they can be corrected. To improve your system’s performance, your technician may repair or alter the ducts, install dampers in the ducts, or adjust or completely move air registers.
Conducting an air balance requires correct preparation of the building and accurate use of other instruments, so it’s a job for a trained, experienced professional.
