In the summertime, nothing beats a family vacation. With Airbnb, you can have all the comforts of home, wherever you travel. But what happens when those comforts break down? Specifically, the air conditioner? The weather is broiling and you can’t do without A/C, but you’re not going to pay for repairs on a property that isn’t yours. Here are a few tips for what to do when your rental A/C stops working.
Talk to the Landlord
If the person you’re renting from is staying in the house as well, this will be easy. They’re likely suffering just as much as you from the heat and will be just as anxious to get the A/C working again.
If the landlord/host isn’t on site, though, call them. When booking the rental house, always be sure you have a contact number where you can reach the owner quickly and easily. Call them, let them know what happened, and ask them to call an HVAC technician to fix the rental A/C as soon as possible.
Go Above Their Heads
If you can’t get through to the host, or they refuse to fix the problem in a timely manner, contact Airbnb’s help center directly (or that of whatever service you’re renting through) and make them aware of the situation, so that they can help you resolve it.
If you’re not renting through a service, and can’t get your host/landlord to make the repairs, you may need to take legal action. Notify the landlord in writing of your grievances and let them know you plan on taking it to court. This may scare them into complying.
If not, continue to pursue the matter until they make restitution. A court case will likely extend beyond your scheduled vacation time, but you can still seek a full or partial refund, as well as possible reimbursement for switching to a new vacation home with a working A/C, if it comes to that.
