How do you make your home comfortable without wasting energy cooling on an empty house? Past solutions have included programmable thermostats that let you turn the A/C off automatically when you’re planning on going out, and zoning systems that let you switch off a specific room or area when it’s not occupied.
But a more effective solution is upon us: smart air conditioners, with motion sensors that can tell if a room is occupied automatically. Here’s a look at how these systems work.
Motion Activated A/C
The underlying principle is simple. Motion sensors are placed on aluminum rods, which are installed on the ceiling of each room or zone in your home. When someone walks into any room, the sensors are activated, sending signals to your A/C to cool this area in particular. When everyone has left the room and movement is no longer detected, the signal is given to turn off the A/C for that zone.
This way, your system only uses the energy necessary to make your family comfortable, without wasting power sending air to areas no one is currently occupying.
Some smart air conditioners even take the technology a step further, integrating your smartphone into the equation. If you’ve left the house, an app uses your phone’s GPS to alert the system when you’re almost home. The system then begins cooling, so you can be comfortable as soon as you arrive.
Is a Smart A/C for Me?
If your home is a good candidate for a zoning system, chances are it’s right for motion sensor HVAC as well. You have a larger home with different sets of heating and cooling needs, and don’t want to waste energy sending air to an area that’s empty. Or your family’s schedule can be erratic and unpredictable, making it difficult for a regular programmable thermostat to keep up. In these situations, a smart A/C can work wonders for your home.
