Which Rooms in Your Home Will Get the Coolest This Summer?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: June 30, 2020

Do some rooms in your home remain nice and cool while others are uncomfortably warm during the summer? You’re not alone. Many home air conditioners leave one or more rooms hotter than the rest. For instance, rooms downstairs tend to be the coolest rooms in multilevel homes. Read on and find out why some rooms in your home tend to be colder than the others and what you can do to resolve the issue.

A Single Thermostat

In an average two-story house, the disparity between the upper and lower floors can be as great as 10 degrees. It’s challenging to keep multiple levels at the same temperature, because you have to account for the heat that naturally rises and the long duct runs required to get conditioned air into all of your rooms.

If there’s only one thermostat regulating all the room temperatures, then the rooms that are farthest from the device will be under-conditioned. You can solve this by upgrading to a zoned HVAC system. By utilizing multiple thermostats and temperature sensors, the system lets you cool rooms individually to meet your desired temperatures for those locations.

Ductwork Issues

Issues such as improper duct design and sizing, holes, and disconnected joints will cause less cold air to reach the rooms that are farther away from your cooling system. As a result, areas that are closer to the system will stay much cooler. An HVAC expert can check your ducts for leakage and other inadequacies and provide ideal solutions.

Inadequate Return Vents

It’s not uncommon to find a large home with only one return vent. This vent may not adequately suck the warm air from the rooms that are far away from it. You’ll have the cool air supplied to these rooms mixing with the warmer air.

You can boost return airflow by keeping the doors to your rooms open. You may also have to add the return ducts in your home.

You don’t have to live in a house where the coolest rooms are only those nearest to the thermostat or air conditioner. In fact, temperature disparities across all the rooms in your home will increase your energy bills unnecessarily. If you’re in the Lorain area, contact Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning for assistance with fixing the source of your temperature imbalances, as well as any other heating and cooling problems.
