It’s highly recommended that you schedule preventative maintenance twice a year (in spring and fall) to make sure your HVAC system runs correctly all year long. But when you schedule maintenance, you should do a little prep work to ensure safe conditions for your HVAC technician. Here’s a primer on safety for your HVAC technician.
Promote Safety for Your HVAC Technician
HVAC technicians are well trained in maintaining safe practices while on the job, but you can take the next step and make sure they have a safe, clean environment to work in. Here are some things to monitor to ensure your technician’s safety.
1. Clean the Area Around Your HVAC Equipment.
Whether your HVAC equipment is in a closet, in an attic, or in the basement, make sure that clean conditions prevail. Improve technician safety by removing clutter — boxes, furniture, cleaning products — and clearing a path so the technician can work comfortably and safely, without hazards.
2. Clean the Area Around the Condenser.
If the technician is going to work on the air conditioner, make sure the area around the outdoor condenser is clear of debris, yard furniture, tools, weeds, and limbs. Clear an area at least 3 feet around the condenser so the technician can work without being hampered. Pay attention to bushes with thorns (such as roses) or with prickly leaves (such as holly) and cut them back.
3. Check the Attic for Hazards.
If your equipment is in the attic, make sure the space is at least minimally clean. Check for rodent waste; you may want to hire a cleanup crew if you find any animal waste. If the attic is simply dirty, try to vacuum as much dirt and debris as you can. Also, check for nails sticking out of timbers, loose wires, and other hazards. Provide some kind of wooden support so the technician can walk safely over joists.
4. Wear a Mask.
Current recommendations to fight COVID-19 suggest that wearing some kind of mask is helpful in not infecting other people, so do your share for technician safety and mask up when the technician arrives.
