Which Historical Architecture Is Most Challenging for HVACs?

By Angie Lyczkowski | Published: September 22, 2020

An apartment or condo is hard enough to heat or cool. How difficult must home comfort be in a centuries-old building with historical architecture? It does pose its challenges. Here are some tips for effectively heating and cooling historical architecture.

HVAC Challenges with Historical Architecture

The main challenge in heating and cooling a historic building is making sure it’s properly equipped. The current HVAC system may include an old boiler or radiators. However, updating it isn’t as simple as just installing a new HVAC system. An old building may not be equipped with proper ductwork. Installing it is expensive and may involve adding a dropped ceiling and new vents and registers, which are detrimental to historical architecture.

Extensive renovations could damage parts of the original building. Installing a heavy new system could even damage a home’s structural integrity. The new system could also introduce moisture into the house, which can be damaging.

Tips for HVAC in Historical Architecture

When it comes to designing a new HVAC system for an old building, it’s important to find a balance. You’ll need to install certain new elements for comfort. How much can you do without being detrimental to the original, historical architecture?

Use the building’s existing HVAC elements when you can. If it has vents with antique grille covers, for instance, make them part of the new ventilation system. Don’t install a whole new system unless it’s absolutely necessary.

What you do need, though, is humidity control. Not only can too much moisture damage old buildings, too little moisture can be detrimental as well. In the winter, when things are dry, humidity can cause cracking and other damage. Keeping humidity levels in the Goldilocks zone is essential for preservation.

Finally, don’t neglect HVAC maintenance. Regular tuneups can keep older equipment running smoothly for years, while ensuring you get the comfort you need and also keeping the building intact.
