Online security is more important than ever. Even with strong passwords, security breaches can make systems vulnerable. Anything connected to the Internet can be hacked. What about your HVAC system? Is it vulnerable? Who would want to access it? If you’re worried about wireless HVAC and hacks, here’s what you need to know.
HVAC Vulnerability
Wireless HVAC and hacks aren’t uncommon. A 2013 data breach of Target stores began when bad actors used a malware attack to penetrate an HVAC company that did business with Target. A wireless connection allowed administrators to monitor temperature and energy usage in Target stores remotely, allowing them to keep things comfortable for their customers. That connection then became a way into Target’s system, allowing hackers to glean millions of customer credit card numbers.
That’s the danger of wireless HVAC and hacks. It’s unlikely that a stranger will try to alter your home’s temperature remotely. However, in a world where everything is Internet-connected, your wireless thermostat or similarly connected appliances can provide someone with a way into an otherwise secure system. Once they’re in, they could then gain access to your computer, phone, and other devices that are filled with your personal information.
Keeping Your System Secure
How do you protect your HVAC system against hackers? The first step is to put it and any other Internet of Things-connected appliances onto a separate network from your home’s computers. You can also split a single network into separate compartments for separate devices, using a Virtual Local Area Network. This prevents hackers who manage to access one device from getting into any others and protects more against wireless HVAC and hacks.
You should also change the username and password on your thermostat. Many Internet of Things devices come with default usernames and passwords, which can be easily discovered. Change it to something unique to you that’s difficult to crack.
Finally, install antivirus protection. This will guard your system against malware and nefarious attempts to access your device. It’s a big help in making sure your system remains safe.
