With regular use, dirt, debris, and particles build up inside your space heaters. Even units that are rarely used will gather dust on their surfaces and internal components over time. So how do you clean space heaters? Should you even clean them in the first place?
Why You Should Clean Space Heaters
Dirt and dust are common issues afflicting poorly maintained space heaters. They eventually clog your heater’s air filters. Dirty space heaters may overheat during operation, posing a fire hazard.
Space heaters are a leading cause of house fires resulting from heating devices, making it crucial for you to ensure that your unit is always clean.
How Often Should You Clean Space Heaters?
Space heaters should be cleaned at least twice annually. If you use your space heaters regularly, clean them at least once every two weeks.
The Cleaning Tools You’ll Need
To effectively clean your space heater, you’ll need:
- Microfiber duster
- Dust mask
- Compressed air duster
- Microfiber cloth or sponge
- Compressed air
- A vacuum equipped with brush, hose, and nozzle attachment
- Screwdriver
How to Clean Your Space Heater
Before cleaning your space heater, wear a dust mask and follow the guidelines that the heater’s manufacturer may have provided.
After turning your space heater off and allowing it to cool completely, use a microfiber duster to get rid of loose dust. Wipe down the unit’s entire surface with a damp sponge. After air-drying the heater, remove the cover and loosen dust and debris in the interior compartment using a compressed air duster. If the heater doesn’t have a cover, target its slats and vents with the air duster’s nozzle.
Vacuum the unit using a hose with a brush attachment without disturbing its wires. Use the narrow nozzle attachment for crevices or tight spaces. If your heater has a cover, remove sticky or stubborn debris with a damp sponge and vacuum the cover. Allow your heater to dry completely before assembling it and turning it back on.
