Just like in most things in life, small mistakes can lead to significant losses when it comes to your HVAC system. Putting your thermostat in certain spots can decrease home comfort, increase energy bills, and shorten your HVAC equipment’s life span. You’ll want to cast a keen eye on your thermostat placement.
Worst Locations for Thermostat Placement
Avoid placing your thermostat in these locations:
- In direct sunlight. If the sun shines directly on your thermostat, the warmer temperatures will make the thermostat trigger your air conditioner to start running when it’s not needed. In the winter, the warmer temperatures may cause the thermostat to keep your furnace off while the rest of your home needs heating.
- Near windows and doors. Doors and windows can let in drafts that cause your thermostat to measure the incoming outdoor air’s temperature rather than the indoor air temperature. As a result, your HVAC system may cycle on and off unnecessarily.
- Above or below supply vents. The air that blows out of the supply vents is much cooler or warmer than your home’s overall temperature. When your thermostat is too close to this air that’s just come from your HVAC unit, it makes your heating or AC system turn on and off frequently without achieving comfortable temperatures for your home.
- Kitchens and bathrooms. Heat and steam can make kitchens and bathrooms significantly warmer than the rest of your house and interfere with thermostat readings.
- Hallways. Hallways have reduced airflow because they’re long and narrow. They don’t reflect the average temperature of your home’s air.
- TVs and lamps. Televisions and lamps release heat, which affects your thermostat.
Ideal Thermostat Placement
You should place your thermostat on an interior wall of a frequently used room, away from the previously mentioned locations. Position it in the middle of the room and about 52 to 60 inches above the ground.
If your thermostat is in the wrong location, consider moving it to enjoy long-term efficiency and savings. For help with thermostat placement or any other HVAC needs in the Lorain area, contact Energy 1 Heating & Air Conditioning.
