When the temperature goes up, the thermostat goes down. It’s necessary to stay cool, but it’s also easy to crank the temperature down too far, blasting cold air and wasting energy. What’s the ideal summer temperature to keep things cool without spending too much? Here’s how to balance comfort and savings with your ideal summer temperature.
Thermostat Settings
According to the Department of Energy, your thermostat should be set to 78 degrees in summer. It may be warmer than you’re used to, but it’s enough to keep your home comfortable while still saving energy. At night, raise the temperature to 82 degrees. Your body temperature drops when you sleep, so the ambient temperature can be slightly warmer without causing you discomfort.
If you find that 78 degrees is too hot, take the thermostat down gradually, one degree at a time, waiting 15 minutes after every readjustment. As soon as you find a comfortable temperature, leave it there. Remember, though, that every extra degree you’re able to tolerate in your home can save you 3% on your energy bill.
Tips for Staying Comfortable
Before you start lowering the thermostat, there are several things you can do to get closer to your ideal summer temperature. First, open the windows in the morning, when it’s cool, to let the air in. In the afternoon, close them and draw the curtains, blinds, or shades to keep the sunlight from heating things up.
You can also use ceiling fans. When the blades spin counterclockwise, they help circulate the air. As it blows onto your skin, the windchill factor makes it feel cooler than it is, so 78 degrees feels more like 74.
Finally, ensure that your thermostat is positioned properly. Avoid hallways and little-used rooms and place it in the living room or somewhere most of the family is likely to be. This ensures that the temperature setting will better reflect the comfort level in your home.
