An air-conditioning compressor is located within the outdoor AC unit. It’s one of the most expensive AC parts to replace. As a matter of fact, when it malfunctions, replacing your entire system may be more cost-effective. Read on to understand why an AC compressor is crucial to your air conditioner.
The Role of an AC Compressor
An evaporator, compressor, and condenser are the three main mechanical AC components. The coils in the indoor evaporator unit contain gaseous refrigerant that absorbs heat from the warm air pulled in through the return vents in your home, producing cool, comfortable air for your house. The refrigerant then flows to the outdoor condenser unit, where the absorbed heat is released. The refrigerant then flows back to the evaporator to restart the cycle.
The compressor is an essential intermediary between the evaporator and the condenser. The refrigerant leaves the AC evaporator as a low-pressure gas. It should have a higher temperature and pressure to release the absorbed heat. The compressor packs the refrigerant molecules tightly, raising the refrigerant’s pressure and temperature.
Heat moves from higher to lower temperatures. When the compressor compresses the refrigerant, it becomes hotter than outdoor air. That allows the heat in the refrigerant to transfer to the cooler outside air. In the process, the heat originally drawn from inside your home transfers to the air outside through your unit’s condenser coils.
Maintaining an AC Compressor
Your compressor can last more than 10 years if serviced regularly. Ensure you schedule an annual tuneup for your AC system. During the visit, your HVAC technician will check on things that could affect your compressor, such as refrigerant levels. You should also keep your outdoor AC unit free of debris such as leaves and grass clippings, which could damage the compressor.
