With the holiday season underway, it’s time to put up your decorations. However, keep in mind that it’s important to decorate safely. Fires from candles, wiring, and other hazards can make this time of year dangerous if you’re not careful. The following tips can help you enjoy a safe and festive season.
Don’t Overload Outlets
If you have holiday lights and other electrical decorations, plan where to put them based on where outlets are. Be careful to not overload any individual outlets, since this is a fire hazard. This goes for both indoor and outdoor lights and decorations.
Use Candles Carefully
If you normally burn scented candles during the holidays, use them cautiously and make sure you decorate safely. Keep them out of reach of kids and pets. Avoid putting them in places where they might be knocked over accidentally. Never leave lit candles unattended.
Keep Flammable Decorations Away From Heat
In order to decorate safely, don’t put anything flammable close to vents or other heat sources, such as a fireplace. Keep lights and similar decorations away from curtains and other flammable material. If you have a live tree, water it regularly and make sure heated air from your vents isn’t blowing on it.
Use the Correct Lights
If you’re putting up outdoor lights, make sure to use bulbs that are designed for outdoor use as a way to decorate safely. These bulbs should have certification from a nationally recognized laboratory, such as UL or CSA. This shows that they can be used safely outdoors.
Check Cords and Wires
Before putting up strings of lights or other decorations, inspect their cords or wires. Avoid using decorations that have frayed or damaged wiring or cords. These can be a fire hazard and give electric shocks.
Turn Off Lights
Don’t leave holiday lights and other decorations on all the time. Use a timer if possible, or turn off and unplug lighting and inflatables when you’re not using them.
